RUNAWAY DOG!

January 16th, 2008

This one is from late February or early March:

I have been walking my dogs pretty much everyday for the past two and a half weeks. At first I was confused about how to train them to walk with me. We tried a few things before we found a method that works for us. I trained the dogs to walk on a loose leash for probably a week. Once they learned that I started making them walk along side me on a short leash. About a week ago I started taking them both out together. I am really surprised by how well we are doing. I am surprised with myself for keeping up with it. I’m surprised with the dogs for learning so quickly. They are still learning to ignore other dogs, but they have improved drastically. Before they would both just go crazy, now they just get very aware and sometimes start to pull. I am able to calm them down really quickly by just making them sit and look at me. We’ve walked in the rain, which isn’t as bad as it might seem. We all come home soaking wet, but it’s worth it. The dogs are much calmer at night when they have had a nice long walk. I have to say, Lily is definitely a funny dog. She hates getting her paws wet. When we are walking around I try and make her walk thru puddles. She will NOT! She jumps over them! It is quite a sight, let me tell you!

Yesterday we went for a walk…I put their leashes on and we went out the door. I stopped in the yard to adjust their leashes when somehow Gonzo managed to get loose.  He ran across the street towards a lady who was walking her dog.  I’m sure that it was terrifying for her to see him come barreling toward her.  I had to struggle to grab him while still trying to maintain control of Lily.  Gonzo was running circles around me.  I’m sure I looked like quite the fool.  Somehow I managed to get a hold of him and then drag both dogs back to the house.  Needless to say, walk time was over for the day.
