I’ll just make it myself…
Sunday, September 13th, 2009About a month ago I went to Trader Joe’s to get a few things. The main thing I was going for was their Tangerine Sugar Scrub. It was, hands down, the best product in the whole world for exfoliating and moisturizing. It was cheap, smelled delicious, and kept my skin super soft all year. You can imagine my shock when I was unable to find it on this trip to Trader Joe’s. After looking around and not seeing it, I went and asked a clerk when they would be getting more. She told me that it had been discontinued. BASTARDS! I was on the verge of tears for a moment, then I got pissed. How dare they discontinue MY sugar scrub!!! I went to the customer service desk and expressed my sadness over the situation. I suspect the woman who made a note of my complaint couldn’t have cared less…
I searched at another store for anything that might be able to fulfill my needs for gentle exfoliation with maximum moisturization. I ended up with an overpriced scrub that left my skin feeling more dry than before. Not to mention the scent was totally not delicious AT ALL. I called Danielle to tell her the bad news. She was the one that turned me on to the TJ’s sugar scrub in the first place, so I knew she would be just as heart broken as I was. We discussed our options and came to the conclusion that it was time we took our exfoliation and moisturization into our own hands.
Today was the day, my loyal readers. Today was the day. After checking out some recipes for homemade scrubs, Danielle and I came up with our very own recipe that shall now go down in history as the best/most tastiest sugar scrub EVAR!
I took the liberty of naming our product.
Da-lia’s Edible Sugar Scrub:
yield: lots
3 cups sugar from evaporated cane juice :exfoliation
1 cup brown sugar, packed :exfolilation and yumminess
3 cups safflower oil :moisturization
1/2 cup grapeseed oil :moisturization/vitamin E
3/4-1 cup unrefined coconut oil :moisturization and yumminess
3 tbsp finely ground coffee :exfoliation, energizing, and yumminess
1/2 fresh vanilla bean :YUMMINESS
4+ tbsp honey :antibacterial qualites, yumminess
All amounts are approximate. Use enough oil to fully moisten the sugar, and then some, but not so much that it is like soup…if it seems too soupy, add more sugar!
In a bowl mix all ingredients except for the coconut oil. Split the 1/2 vanilla bean longways and scrape out the beany-goodness from inside the pod and add to the mixture. Reserve the pod for later…
Use a blender to mix all ingredients. We had to do it in two batches. Add coconut oil to the mixture and blend until mixed thoroughly. Store in a container, add the left over vanilla bean pod to the scrub, kinda like a bay leaf…it will add extra yumminess over time.
Use this scrub in the shower. Be sure to mix well before each use. Apply the mixture to your body and rub. Rinse well. Enjoy.
This is our first attempt. I used it in the shower tonight and I am happy with it.
I found this interesting tidbit about the topical use of coffee.
Coffee: Coffee is granular and feels nice on the skin but the caffeine has added benefits. Applied topically coffee helps to redistribute fat cells and decrease the formation of cellulite. It also acts as a vasorestrictor, tightening and shrinking blood vessels thereby helping eliminate varicose veins. It has been used for years in spas in Hawaii and on the coast of Bali.
