Loose Leash Training
Sunday, February 4th, 2007Apparently I have been unwittingly teaching Gonzo that pulling on the leash is good! OMG! See what happens when you don’t know what you’re doing! I thought by taking him for walks everyday and keeping him on a short leash would make him realize that he has to walk nicely to get any slack in the leash. It wasn’t working at all! So, after doing some major internet research, I think I have found some useful information on training my dogs to walk on a loose leash. Here is a link to the information I found.
I found numerous website with the same information, so that means it MUST work, right? It may take a while for Gonzo to learn leash etiquette because he is still young and he is a very energetic dog, but all the information I read said that if I keep up with the training and be consistent, it WILL work. I am really excited about this because I don’t have to buy any special equipment. I read that by relying on special equipment (head halter, harness, pinch collar, etc.) the dog never learns the proper way to walk on a leash and that those items are just for managing their behavior, not correcting it.
